Security Update Rolled Out By Google For Nexus 4, 5, 6, 7 And 9

Earlier this month, on the 8th of September, T-Mobile revealed that Google is launching Android updates for almost the whole Nexus lineup – specifically the LG Nexus 4 and Nexus 5, Motorola Nexus 6, Asus Nexus 7 and HTC Nexus 9. These updates won’t bring any new features to Nexus smartphones and tablets; instead, they’re aimed at patching security and fixing some bugs.

When the Stagefright bug exposed the vulnerability of these devices in early August, Google announced that they would be implementing a new initiative that would see them launch monthly security updates for Nexus devices. Whether these updates are the first for the initiative or not is unclear, as Google is yet to confirm or deny anything.

The good news is that the lack of features has meant that the OTAs (over-the-air updates) are quite small in size. We’re talking around 30MB for the Nexus 6 and under 20MB for all the other devices. Whilst most data plans would be to cope with such a small update, you will have to download over Wi-Fi. This will ensure that your connection is not interrupted during the download.

If these updates haven’t reached your Nexus device yet, don’t worry! They’re gradually rolling out across servers, which means that it might take awhile for the OTA to become available for download on your device. As the updates are so small, we recommend downloading them as soon as possible after receiving the notification – it’s to protect the security of your device, after all.
