Whilst there has been a bit of buzz surrounding Sony’s rumoured mirrorless camera models over past months, the company finally revealed on Wednesday that they would soon be launching their A7 and A7R digital cameras. Sony has claimed that these new models will be the world’s smallest full-frame interchangeable-lens cameras.
The A7 model features a 24.3 megapixel full-frame Exmor CMOS sensor, a Fast Hybrid AF system that combines phase- and contrast-detect AF methods, and can shoot up to five frames per second continuously. The A7R model (which is for advanced photographers and professionals) features a 36.4 megapixel 35mm Exmor CMOS sensor and no optical low-pass filter.
Both cameras come fully fitted with a range of imaging features, including: Sony’s new BIONZ X processor, fast autofocus capabilities, an XGA OLED viewfinder, full HD 60p video recording, WiFi and NCF connectivity. Both cameras are comprised of magnesium alloy and have been built to withstand dust, moisture and other tough weather conditions.
The director of the interchangeable lens camera business at Sony Electronics, Mike Kahn, said in a statement that “the A7 and A7R cameras are significantly smaller, lighter and more portable than any other full-frame interchangeable lens camera yet deliver image quality, power and performance that professionals and enthusiasts crave.”
Unsurprisingly, the cameras are quite expensive. The A7 model will be offered with a 28-70mm f3.5-f5.6 full-frame lens for around $2000 and will be available body-only for around $1700. The A7R, on the other hand, will be available body-only for around $2300. Sony has announced that both cameras will be available in December, just in time for Christmas.
At the same time, Sony also announced that they will be adding a new RX10 zoom camera to their range, as well as 5 new full-frame e-mount lenses.
