Apple Announces New Operating System iOS 7

by Alice Stewart

At the World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC) in San Francisco late on Monday evening, Apple CEO Tim Cook announced the next generation of the iOS, known as the iOS 7. It boasts many improvements and additions that Apple users are sure to be excited about, such as a new Control Centre and the ability to multitask. Cook said that this would be the biggest change to the platform since the iPhone was first introduced five years ago.

Rumours of a flat design have been confirmed, but the icons themselves will not be flat (including default apps like the calendar, phone, message and Game Centre). The new interface will actually make the iPhone appear bigger, as all of the apps and features have been designed to make use of the entire screen. There are a number of improvements that will be made to the iPhone, including:

  • Control Centre - This will give the user quick access to the controls for Airplane Mode, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Do Not Disturb settings. It will also enable them to adjust the screen brightness, pause or play a song, jump to the next song and stream music with AirPlay.

  • AirDrop – This gives users a new way to share content with other iPhone users nearby. It will show you nearby contacts and, using peer-to-peer transfer, will transfer content without a network.

    “Airdrop” another iOS7 feature
  • iCloud Keychain – This is an app that stores passwords and credit card information securely and is made available on all devices, giving users access wherever they are.

  • Find My iPhone Activation Lock – This feature requires you to insert your Apple ID and password before you can turn it off, erase data or re-activate a device after it has been remotely erased.

  • Notification Sync – This feature allows users to dismiss a notification on one device and to have it dismissed on all of your devices, such as your iPhone, iPad or even iPod.

One of the biggest advantages of the new iOS would have to be the ability to multitask, which Apple has been lacking over the years. The iOS 7 beta software and SDK have already been made available for iOS Developer Program members and the Apple team announced that iPhone 4 users and later, iPad 2 users and later, iPod mini and iPod touch users will be able to get a free software update sometime in the coming spring.
